Release Dates Aplenty

September 19, 2008

This past week, due to school, I was unable to frequently post, causing me to miss out on some big release date announcements. While I have been shifting from class to class, most people have been finding out when SackBoy will be running, jumping, and sacking into our hearts. The complete mini-rundown is below.

Mirror’s Edge: EA’s parkour-esque, free-running spectacular will be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 11th. It is rumored that the PC release date has been delayed, considering that it was conveniently left out. A demo for the game will be out before launch, and PS3 owners can expect exclusive DLC, which is a relief compared to the next announcement.

Grand Theft Auto IV (360 DLC): Microsoft confirmed that the “exclusive episodes for Grand Theft Auto IV will be available on Xbox 360 starting fall 2008.” Fall has already started, so we might be continuing Niko Bellic’s epic adventure soon.

LittleBigPlanet: Anxious gamers will finally be able to make their own SackBoys and levels on October 21st. The game that might convince me to buy a PS3 is out in almost a month; I better start scraping some cash together.

Prince of Persia: On December 2nd, the cel-shaded, AI-redefining chapter in the Prince of Persia series will be in stores. The game will be out on 360, PS3, and PC, alongside a DS counterpart, Prince of Persia: The Fallen King.

Wii Music: The game that brought us all ear aches at E3 2008 will be flying onto shelves and into the homes of North American five-year-olds, on October 20th. If you want your games to be more like toys, Wii Music might be for you!

WipEout HD was absent from E3 2008, but not long after, gameplay videos were released showing off the games gorgeous 1080p graphics running at 60 frames per second. Sony announced that their futuristic, stylized racer will be available via the PlayStation Store for $19.99 on September 25th. Just as a reminder, SCEA Producer Daimion Pinnock listed some of the games many features, including:

  • Online play that supports up to 8 racers competing on a track at a time

SackBoys In The Wild

September 11, 2008

This particularly Australian trailer gives us gamers a sneak peek into the world of LittleBigPlanet. Wild SackBoys and SackGirls are a threatened species that survive by their cunning and jumping skills, but mainly their jumping skills. All of their predators have a fatal flaw that, once discovered, can be used to easily discard them. Tune in later when the disembodied, Steve Erwin-esque voice details cooperative Sack play.

Kratos or Nariko? Which SackBoy/Girl would you choose? You already know that Kratos is available by pre-order from GameStop, but what about our Heavenly Sword heroine? If you want Nariko in SackForm, you’ll have to look for the bright yellow tag, because she’s available exclusively from Best Buy. As a final tease, Media Molecule wants all Canadians to prepare for a pre-order announcement. Is it the maple leaf SackPlant? Let’s wait and see.

    PS3 80GB LittleBigBundle

    September 1, 2008

When it comes to bundles, Sony has always been very pomiscuous. Just about every big title has been bundled with a PlayStation system, and even some not so big. The trend will continue in Europe on November 5, with LittleBigPlanet. The package comes with an 80GB PS3, LittleBigPlanet, and a Dualshock 3 controller. All of this can be yours for about €400 (around $585), complete with LittleBigBoxArt. Seriously, I’ve never seen such dedication to a console’s box art.

    Update 3: LittleBigPlanet Pre-Order Goodies

    August 31, 2008

Live near Circuit City? Like stickers? Want to pre-order LittleBigPlanet? If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, you’re in luck! The LittleBigStickerBook will be awarded to all gamers who pre-order LittleBigPlanet at Circuit City. Why limit yourself to creating levels in the game? With the sticker book you can make your own (less exciting) levels in the real world. Who could pass up on this amazing offer?

    Warhawk Expansion Operation: Fallen Star

    August 26, 2008

The main appeal of Warhawk has always been its flight combat, but Sony is almost ready to release an expansion that will add all new flight mechanics. It’s time for you to meet the Icarus Mk. 1 Rocket Pack, otherwise know as a jetpack. Warhawk’s Game Director, Dylan Jobe, has been teasing fans with a jetpack announcement, but it was not revealed until this week at the Leipzig Games Convention.

Controlling the Icarus Mk. 1 Rocket Pack will be similar to controlling the games past vehicles. First, you press SQUARE to grab a jetpack off of the Daedalus Rapid Assembly Device (D-RAD), a new machine that builds jetpacks one at a time. Once you have acquired your prize, hold R2 to thrust, double-tap R2 and use the directional stick to boost-dodge, and hold L2 to stay at your current height. Once you have the controls down you’ll be traversing maps and racking up kills much faster.

Along with the Icarus and D-RAD, a new level has been included in this catastrophic expansion. Tau Crater is “a smoky, forested island that features lots of vertical elements to give players tons of cools places to use the jetpack.” What could be better than a new map specifically designed to make use of your new equipment? There are ten layouts for Tau Crater including Mission Critical, West Coast, Tug of War, and more. In addition, thirty bonus layouts have been added to the game’s original maps, implementing this new mechanic into old levels.

They say the best things in life are always free, but sometimes they are wrong. If you want to experience this package you’ll have to shell out $7.99, or $15.99 for the Booster Combo Pack which contains all three Warhawk expansions. Operation: Fallen Star will be available for download on August 28. Finally, be sure not to miss the free v1.5 update that releases tomorrow, August 27.
