Portal: Prelude, An Unofficial Prequel

September 18, 2008

Video game modifications sure are something, aren’t they? The Unreal Tournament series, as well as Half-Life 2 have had some amazing mods, but Portal: Prelude raises the bar to a whole new level.

Portal: Still Alive was unveiled at Microsoft’s E3 2008 press conference, but that will not continue the story and will have miniscule new content. Hardcore Portal fans need a big experience to tide them over until Portal 2 is released, and that is just what Prelude will deliver.

While this may not be an official release from Valve, it will actually be longer than the original Portal, and have it’s own story-line, in which test subjects are observed by Aperture Science employees, meaning it is the pre-GLaDOS era. A main team of three people are developing the game, which will include “8 chapters, 19 test chambers, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps,” already more than the original game, “and more than 400 lines of speech.” The game will only be available for PC Portal owners, but the soon-to-come download is said to be free. GLaDOS? No. Amazing offer? Yes!

Doug Lombardi Gives Portal: Still Alive Details

July 18, 2008

OXM hosted an interview with Valve’s Doug Lombardi and got him to shed some light on their Portal XBLA. Lombardi said “It’s just a series of new challenges,” which most likely means a full length Portal 2 is in the works. Valve wants the game to be “another way for people to experience Portal, without having to buy the full Orange Box.” One sad bit of news, is that everyone’s favorite robot, GLaDOS, will not be featured. They didn’t want to create more dialogue that might mess up the story. Again, Portal 2, in the works. GLaDOS or no GLaDOS, Portal: Still Alive is a must-download. My brain is almost completely melted by summer freedom.

GLaDOS Is Back

July 14, 2008

Perhaps the most innovative game of last year, I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t want to see Portal return. Obviously, the crowd at Microsoft’s press event love it; a unanimous cheer filled the room as soon as the computerized voice was heard. Portal: Still Alive is a Xbox Live Arcade exclusive and I can’t wait. Luckily, the wait won’t be that long, because Valve is currently looking at a Fall release date. Whether or not this is an actual sequel or a filler game is unknown, but I don’t care either way. Containing downloadable levels and achievements, this game is a must-buy (for me at least).
