Bungie Unveils New Map: Assembly

August 30, 2008

All Penny Arcade Expo attendees will be able to play Bungie’s newest map creation this weekend. The new map, Assembly, is very…um…purple, and it has a definite Covenant theme. It is unknown when Assembly will be available to the non-PAX goers, but Bungie has released some screen shots to tide you over.

Far Cry 2 Focusing On Immersion

August 30, 2008

One aspect of games that hardcore gamers often overlook are “teleporting” camera animations. A perfect example of this: Halo 3’s vehicle flip. Whenever a player overturns their vehicle in Halo 3, a message prompts them to press a button to flip the vehicle. Ubisoft Montreal is trying to create a revolutionary sense of immersion in Far Cry 2. One of their main goals for Far Cry 2 “was to immerse the player in the physicality of his avatar,” and “to make him really feel like he is physically embodied in that world.” To acheive this, they have made fluid animations for virtually every action in the game. From wear and tear visable on the player’s weapons, to navigating via a paper map in real-time, the folks at Ubisoft Montreal are attempting an astonishing level of realism. With as little as I used to know about this game, it is shaping up nicely to be my most anticipated shooter of the year.

Gearbox Software Behind Halo 4?

August 27, 2008

The Official Xbox Magazine reported a rumor that Gearbox Software would be working on Halo 4 as a launch title for the Xbox 360’s predecessor. Considering that Gearbox has had some experience with the franchise, granted it was only a port to the PC, this rumor might not be that far off. Ben Fritz of Variety claims his Gearbox source said they have “definitely had conversations with Microsoft about doing a new “Halo” game and is very excited at the prospect.” The evidence is all very promising, but Fritz’s source affirmed that “there was no deal in place.” At this point the Halo franchise has been run dry. We already have the first three, but now there’s the possibility of being slapped with four more: Halo Wars, Bungie’s project, Peter Jackson’s Halo, and Halo 4. Soon, I’ll agree that this is the most overrated franchise.

Warhawk Expansion Operation: Fallen Star

August 26, 2008

The main appeal of Warhawk has always been its flight combat, but Sony is almost ready to release an expansion that will add all new flight mechanics. It’s time for you to meet the Icarus Mk. 1 Rocket Pack, otherwise know as a jetpack. Warhawk’s Game Director, Dylan Jobe, has been teasing fans with a jetpack announcement, but it was not revealed until this week at the Leipzig Games Convention.

Controlling the Icarus Mk. 1 Rocket Pack will be similar to controlling the games past vehicles. First, you press SQUARE to grab a jetpack off of the Daedalus Rapid Assembly Device (D-RAD), a new machine that builds jetpacks one at a time. Once you have acquired your prize, hold R2 to thrust, double-tap R2 and use the directional stick to boost-dodge, and hold L2 to stay at your current height. Once you have the controls down you’ll be traversing maps and racking up kills much faster.

Along with the Icarus and D-RAD, a new level has been included in this catastrophic expansion. Tau Crater is “a smoky, forested island that features lots of vertical elements to give players tons of cools places to use the jetpack.” What could be better than a new map specifically designed to make use of your new equipment? There are ten layouts for Tau Crater including Mission Critical, West Coast, Tug of War, and more. In addition, thirty bonus layouts have been added to the game’s original maps, implementing this new mechanic into old levels.

They say the best things in life are always free, but sometimes they are wrong. If you want to experience this package you’ll have to shell out $7.99, or $15.99 for the Booster Combo Pack which contains all three Warhawk expansions. Operation: Fallen Star will be available for download on August 28. Finally, be sure not to miss the free v1.5 update that releases tomorrow, August 27.

The Joker Has Tricks Up His Sleeve

August 24, 2008

No, Heath Ledger’s version of The Joker won’t be in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but he’s still an amazing character. We’ve always known The Joker to be the man behind the curtain moreso than the man doing the fighting. This time around we get to see what he’s really made of, and I can assure, he has some tricks up his sleeve. The Joker’s fatality isn’t the most extreme out there, but it makes you step back and go, “Woah,” more than the rest.

LittleBigPlanet Leipzig Trailer

August 24, 2008

The folks at Media Molecule have yet again proven that customization options in LittleBigPlanet are unlimited. The movie Godzilla has been recreated in SackForm, and it’s better than the original (which isn’t really that big of an accomplishment). I’ll be looking forward to The Dark Knight level.

LittleBigPlanet Levels Will Not Be Region Locked

August 23, 2008

After some confusion and disappointment, Sony has announced that LittleBigPlanet “will have a global server,” correcting their false announcement. Gamers everywhere were saddened to hear that they wouldn’t be able to share levels with their international friends. This message comes from a Sony representative who confirms the game won’t be region specific:

Hi all, as many of you may have heard already in an interview at Leipzig the senior producer for LittleBigPlanet announced that the game is region locked. This is in fact not the case, and all shared levels in the game will be available worldwide. The confusion arose out of regional differences in how moderation will work as there are different legal rules each region have to play by, and at one point this looked like it may require the game to be independent in each region – however this has been worked around and there will only be one region for the game…. a LittleBigRegion.

Apologies for any confusion over this issue, however I’m pretty sure you’re happy with the result.

Now, SackBoys around the world will be able to play in peace. Hooray diversity!
